What Are Veneers

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells composed of tooth-colored materials, such as porcelain, that are designed to cover the front of your teeth. First, the dentist will make a unique model of your teeth. This model is then sent to a dental technician who creates your custom veneers for your teeth.

After your custom veneers are created, your dentist will prepare your tooth to achieve the desired aesthetic result. Depending on how much your tooth needs to be trimmed, you may have a temporary veneer placed on the tooth until the new one is ready for placement. Permanent veneers are adhered to the tooth with a special kind of cement and then hardened with ultraviolet light. Though they only cover the front of your teeth, you’ll be pleased to know they will look just like natural teeth!

VENEERS VS. CROWNS

Veneers and crowns are both dental restoration methods we offer at Earwood Dentistry that can improve the appearance and function of your teeth. The primary difference between these two treatments is that veneers cover only the front of your teeth, while a crown covers the entire tooth. Which one is best for your smile needs will depend on the condition of your teeth and what you’re trying to fix.

Veneers are a less invasive procedure compared to crowns because the preparation process leaves more of your natural tooth intact. With a crown, your dentist will need to trim some of the teeth from all sides to create a stable base for the crown to adhere to. As veneers only cover the front of your teeth, it is only this section that needs any trimming or preparation.

CARING FOR YOUR VENEERS

Veneers are made of strong materials that look and feel like natural teeth and they regularly last upwards of ten years with the right maintenance and care. Practice proper oral hygiene with a soft toothbrush, proper toothpaste, and continue staying up-to-date with your regular dental checkups for the best results. Though they are stain-resistant, your dentist may also recommend that you avoid coffee, red wine and tobacco products to maintain the color and beauty of your new smile.

Typically, once your veneers are bonded to your teeth, they won’t move or break off. However, if you grind or clench your teeth during the day or while you sleep, you may need to wear a nightguard to protect your veneers as well as your natural teeth.
