What Constitutes A Dental Emergency

It is important to understand the difference between a standard dental issue that can be treated at a later date and a real emergency that needs immediate attention. Sometimes, what seems in the moment like a critical issue is actually something fully treatable that can wait a day or so until you can make it into the dentist for treatment. It can be hard to know whether something is a problem that can wait until morning or a genuine dental emergency needing prompt care and treatment.

Some common dental emergencies include:

  • Broken or cracked tooth/teeth

  • Broken jaw

  • A knocked out permanent tooth

  • Object caught between the teeth

  • Severe, persistent toothache

In certain cases, it may be your pain level or visible signs of trauma that determine whether your situation requires immediate care. For example, a chipped or cracked tooth may need immediate attention if the fracture is very painful or has left sharp fragments that are causing trauma such as cuts or scrapes inside your mouth. If your chipped tooth is not causing you any pain, you may be able to wait until the morning to set up an appointment with your dentist.

To help you determine if you are experiencing a dental emergency, take note if any of the following have occurred:

  • Severe pain

  • A lost tooth

  • Permanent teeth that feel loose, with or without the accompaniment of pain

  • Signs of infection, such as swelling around your gums and face

  • Profuse bleeding

What To Do In A Dental Emergency

If you have determined that you are experiencing a dental emergency, the first step is to assess the situation and determine your next steps. Dental emergencies can be scary when the occur, so make sure to take a deep breath and don’t panic.

If you have lost or chipped a portion off of your tooth, see if the tooth or tooth fragment can be recovered before rushing away to get treatment. If you can recover the lost tooth or fragment, place it in cold milk while you get in touch with your dentist. This can greatly improve the likelihood of the tooth being saved.

Depending on your situation, such as the severity of the emergency or whether your emergency occurred after hours, you may need to seek immediate care by calling 911 or visiting the emergency room. Otherwise, call our office and describe, in the best detail you can, what has happened. Our experienced team will help direct you through the next steps based on your individual needs.
